Black edge is a dark line or series of spots that develops around the outside of a mirror. It appears when the reflective metal behind the glass begins to corrode or separate near the perimeter.
Why Does the Damage Start at the Edge?
The edges are often the easiest place for moisture, humid air, cleaning liquid, or chemicals to reach the mirror backing. Once the protective coating is damaged or repeatedly exposed, corrosion can spread inward beneath the glass.
Bathroom humidity, liquid left along the bottom edge, unsuitable adhesive, and damaged backing can all contribute.
Can Black Edge Be Cleaned Off?
No. The discoloration is behind the glass, not dirt on the viewing surface. Cleaning the front will not remove it.
A small affected area may sometimes be hidden by a frame, but widespread damage usually requires repair by a specialist or replacement of the mirror.
How Can It Be Reduced?
Keep liquids from sitting around the edges, avoid spraying cleaner directly onto the mirror, use compatible installation materials, and provide adequate bathroom ventilation.
