What Is an LED Mirror?

An LED mirror is a mirror with built-in light-emitting diodes positioned behind the glass, around its edges, or within frosted sections on the front. The integrated lighting can support grooming, improve room ambience, and reduce the need for a separate mirror light fixture.

How Does an LED Mirror Work?

LED mirrors use strips or modules containing multiple LED light sources. Depending on the design, the LEDs may shine through a frosted light band toward the user or project light from behind the mirror onto the surrounding wall.

An LED driver converts and regulates the electrical power required by the lighting system. The mirror may connect to power through a plug or a hardwired junction box. Exact voltage requirements and installation methods vary by model.

Some LED mirrors also include touch controls, adjustable brightness, selectable color temperatures, memory settings, sensors, or an anti-fog heating pad. These features are not included on every LED mirror, so the individual product specifications should always be checked.

Front-Lit vs. Backlit LED Mirrors

A front-lit mirror directs light toward the user through illuminated sections on the face of the mirror. This design is commonly used for makeup, shaving, skincare, and other close grooming tasks.

A backlit mirror places the LEDs behind the glass, producing a softer glow around the mirror’s perimeter. Backlighting can create visual ambience and help the mirror stand out from the wall, but the amount of forward-facing task light depends on the design.

Some mirrors combine front and back lighting to provide both facial illumination and a decorative halo effect.
