Mirror distortion is a visible change in the apparent shape, proportion, or alignment of a reflected image. Straight lines may look bowed, repeated objects may appear wavy, or a person’s proportions may seem slightly stretched or compressed.
What Causes a Distorted Reflection?
The reflective image follows the shape of the mirror surface. Even a small curve can redirect reflected light enough to become noticeable at a distance. Glass flatness, thickness, size, manufacturing variation, and some heat-treatment effects can all influence the surface.
Installation is another common factor. An uneven wall, concentrated spots of adhesive, overtightened clips, a twisted frame, or poorly positioned brackets can place stress on the glass. Large panels tend to make small variations easier to see because the reflection covers a wider field.
Is Some Distortion Normal?
No manufactured mirror is perfectly flat at every scale, and slight variation may only appear when the mirror is viewed from far away or at a sharp angle. The practical question is whether the effect interferes with normal use at the intended viewing distance.
Decorative beveled borders intentionally bend reflections around the edge, while the central viewing area should remain reasonably consistent. Tilting a full-length mirror can also change the apparent view without indicating a defect in the glass.
Can Mirror Distortion Be Fixed?
First check installation. Hardware should support the mirror without forcing it against an uneven wall, and adhesives should be applied according to the mirror and mounting-system instructions. Releasing excessive pressure or correcting the support surface may improve installation-related distortion.
Distortion caused by the glass itself generally cannot be polished away after the mirror is finished. If the reflection remains unacceptable after the installation is checked, replacement may be the practical solution. Document the effect from the normal viewing position when discussing it with the seller or installer.
