What Is an LED Driver?

An LED driver is the component that converts and regulates electrical power for an LED lighting system. In a lighted mirror, it supplies the type of power required by the LED strip instead of sending household electricity directly to the LEDs.

The driver may be built into the mirror housing or supplied as a separate power adapter.

How Does an LED Driver Work?

A plug-in or hardwired mirror normally receives alternating current, or AC, from the building. The LED driver converts that incoming electricity into the controlled direct current, or DC, used by the lighting.

It also keeps the electrical output within the range expected by the LEDs. Without suitable regulation, the LEDs could flicker, operate inconsistently, overheat, or fail early.

Constant-Voltage vs. Constant-Current Drivers

A constant-voltage driver maintains a set output voltage, such as 12V or 24V. This type is commonly paired with compatible LED strips.

A constant-current driver regulates the amount of current flowing through the LEDs. It is used when the lighting system is designed around a specific current rating.

These driver types are not automatically interchangeable.
