A front-lit mirror is a mirror with built-in lighting that shines forward toward the person using it. The light usually passes through frosted sections on the front of the glass, making the face easier to see while applying makeup, shaving, or doing skincare.
Unlike a backlit mirror, which mainly shines light onto the wall, a front-lit mirror provides more direct illumination in front of the mirror.
Key Features of a Front-Lit Mirror
- Forward-facing light: The lighting is directed toward the face instead of only behind the mirror.
- Frosted light bands: Light passes through translucent areas around the edge or across selected parts of the mirror.
- Facial illumination: Front lighting helps reduce shadows created by ceiling lights or dim room lighting.
- Hidden LEDs: The LED strips remain concealed behind the glass or internal diffuser.
- Different light layouts: Illuminated sections may appear on two sides, around the full border, or in a custom pattern.
- Optional controls: Some models include adjustable brightness, color-temperature settings, touch buttons, or memory functions.
How Does a Front-Lit Mirror Work?
Selected areas of the mirror’s reflective backing are removed or left uncoated to create light-transmitting bands. These sections are frosted so the light appears softer and the individual LEDs are less visible.
LED strips installed behind the frosted areas shine through the glass toward the user. A diffuser helps spread the light more evenly across the illuminated section.
An LED driver supplies regulated power to the lighting system. Some mirrors combine front lighting with rear LEDs to provide facial illumination and a wall-glow effect at the same time.
