An antique mirror is either a genuinely old mirror or a newer mirror made to look aged. Its glass may show cloudy areas, dark spots, faded patches, or subtle changes in tone that give the reflection a timeworn appearance.
The term can also describe a mirror with an ornate or vintage-inspired frame, even when the reflective glass remains clear.
How Is an Antique-Style Mirror Made?
Modern antiqued mirror glass is usually created by intentionally distressing selected areas of the reflective coating behind the glass. Different treatments can produce speckles, darker patches, soft fading, or irregular patterns that resemble natural aging.
A protective backing is then applied behind the decorative finish. Because the pattern is created within or behind the reflective layer, it does not wipe away like dirt on the front surface.
The exact process and appearance vary by manufacturer, so no two antiqued patterns need to look identical.
Antique Mirror vs. Vintage-Style Mirror
An antique mirror may have visible aging in the reflection itself. A vintage-style mirror can use new, clear glass surrounded by a frame designed to resemble an older period.
A carved gold frame, for example, may look traditional without making the mirror glass antique. Check the product description if the condition of the reflection matters to you.
