What Is a Capsule Mirror?

A capsule mirror is an elongated mirror with rounded ends and relatively straight sides. Its smooth, pill-shaped outline falls somewhere between a rectangle and an oval, giving it a softer appearance without losing too much usable mirror space.

Capsule mirrors may be installed vertically or horizontally and can be framed, frameless, lighted, or finished with a beveled edge.

What Does a Capsule Mirror Look Like?

A typical capsule mirror has two semicircular ends connected by straight or gently curved sides. When mounted vertically, it creates a tall, narrow reflection. Turned horizontally, the same shape can span a vanity, console, or wider section of wall.

The term “pill-shaped mirror” is sometimes used for the same design.

Capsule Mirror vs. Arched Mirror

A capsule mirror is rounded at both ends. An arched mirror normally has a curved top, straighter sides, and a flat bottom.

A capsule shape feels balanced from end to end, while an arch resembles a doorway or architectural opening.

Capsule Mirror vs. Oval Mirror

An oval mirror curves continuously around its entire edge. A capsule mirror usually has longer, straighter sides between its rounded ends.

Because of these straighter sections, a capsule mirror generally provides more usable reflective width than an oval of similar overall dimensions.

Where Are Capsule Mirrors Used?

Vertically mounted capsule mirrors work well above narrow bathroom vanities, in entryways, or beside wardrobes. Taller versions can also function as dressing mirrors.

A horizontal capsule mirror can suit a wide vanity, console table, or decorative wall. Before choosing the orientation, compare the mirror’s dimensions with the furniture or fixture below it.
